Projects

FDN engineering has designed and built Ultrabridges successfully around The Netherlands, and more assignments are expected in coming months. The unique structural design opens doors to an enormously large market.
3D PRINTED HEAVY TRAFFIC BRIDGE, GRONINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS

In April 2016, FDN started making research to print the world’s first 3D printed concrete heavy traffic bridge with the collaboration of Eindhoven University of Technology. The bridge has been designed by FDN for the province of Groningen in the  North of The Netherlands. Project contractors are FDN, TU/e, Weber Beamix, and BAM. Oosterhuis for groundwork and foundation. The bridge is 18m long and 4m wide, made of C45 concrete and reinforced with iron bars. Printed bridge has 1:3 scale of the design which has been tested in September 2017. After the successful verification process, in April 2018 the actual size bridge with the largest printed concrete bridge beam in the world has been tested and certified.

ZEELSTERBRUG, EINDHOVEN, THE NETHERLANDS

FDN has designed slender HPC (high performance concrete) parapet elements for Zeelsterbrug in Eindhoven. The bridge has been rebuilt due to insufficient bearing capacity. The parapets are up to 11m long and 3m high, and have a rather complex shape. FDN was asked to design very light and durable elements. The problem was that the bridge deck does not have sufficient stiffness, and parapets made of standard concrete would be too heavy for the beams in the bridge deck. For this reason, FDN designed parapets from HPC 120. This material is strong and enables to design the elements with reduced weight. In order to comply with the weight requirements, the wall of the elements is only 5cm thick. The head is hollow, filled with polystyrene blocks. FDN was nominated for the Dutch Concrete Awards 2017 for this innovation.

BRIDGE ZWAAIKOM, EINDHOVEN, THE NETHERLANDS

A new pedestrian bridge over Eindhovensch water channel has been built in the city of Eindhoven. The bridge had to be removable, light and durable. These conditions perfectly match with the application of UHPFRC. The span of the bridge is 22m. The pre-cast deck is a girder box with 80-150mm thick walls. The height of the deck is only 0.4m. Hence the slenderness of this bridge is only 1/55 whereas the slenderness of standard bridges is around 1/35. The minimal concrete class is C170/200. The construction started in December 2014 and the whole project, together with adjacent roads, was finished in March 2015.

HOEKERSINGEL, ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

The first Ultrabridge has been successfully built in Rotterdam in 2012. The total length of the bridge is 19m and width is 3,4m. The whole bridge is made from only 9m3 of Ultra High-Strength concrete C170/200. The bionic shape of the railing has been designed by famous architect Chris Bosse. The originality and innovation resulted in awards such as the Dutch Concrete Technology Award 2013 and the FiB Special Mention Award for outstanding concrete structures.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS, ROTTERDAM, EINDHOVEN
The Ultrabridges with new designs

FDN has been assigned to optimize the designs for existing bridges with various shapes of railings in UHPFRC. The advantages of this modular system give architectural freedom. The pattern of the railing struts is not fixed and practically any shape is possible.
